Idus Strengthens Development Team with Gangnam Tech Center
Preparing an 180-Seat Office in Gangnam... Operated as a Tech Center
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Cheol-hyun] Backpacker (CEO Kim Dong-hwan), which operates the online handmade market 'Idius,' announced on the 7th that it has established the 'Backpacker Gangnam Camp' in Seocho-gu, Seoul, to strengthen its development organization and will operate it as a tech center.
Founded in 2012, Backpacker is headquartered in Mapo-gu and has been conducting various online and offline businesses with the online handmade market Idius as its main focus. This office separation is a strategic investment to strengthen technology in line with Idius's rapid growth, establishing a second office in Gangnam, a key transportation hub.
Located at the Gangnam Station intersection, Backpacker Gangnam Camp is a large office with a total of 180 seats, housing the technology departments. Gangnam Camp will be led by COO/CPO (Chief Operating Officer/Chief Product Officer) Jeong Bo-ram, who previously served as CEO at Coupang, together with newly appointed CTO (Chief Technology Officer) Choi Sung-il.
To strengthen development capabilities, Backpacker recruited former Yanolja Technology Director Choi Sung-il as CTO last month. CTO Choi Sung-il has worked at leading consumer tech companies such as Coupang and Yanolja, notably leading mobile app service development for five years at Coupang and playing a major role in enhancing technological capabilities. Based on this, Backpacker plans to increase its technology organization to 150 members through active hiring and focus on core areas such as machine learning-based recommendations and search to expand services reflecting user preferences. CTO Choi Sung-il said, "Idius is an attractive service leading the handmade industry and culture," adding, "I want to contribute to accelerating business growth through technological innovation and helping it become a global service."
