Reconstruction of 'Geumcheon Green Plaza' Above Waterproofing Facilities at Hoamsan Foot, Geumcheon-gu
Creation of 5 Themed Gardens Stimulating the Five Senses Including Rose Garden, Flower Perfume Garden, and Eoksae Garden... Significant Expansion of Park Facilities Such as Fountain, Complex Playground, Jogging Track, and Solar-Powered Rest Area
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) reopened the ‘Geumcheon Green Plaza’ to residents on the 30th of last month after reconstructing it on top of the waterproof facility at the foot of Hoamsan Mountain.
The ‘Geumcheon Green Plaza’ is a park created on an 8,000㎡ area above an underground waterproof facility (24,000 tons) installed in 2015 at 412-5, Siheung-dong to prevent flood damage.
However, due to a lack of exercise facilities and low utilization of the lawn plaza, residents have been requesting a full renovation of the park since 2018.
Accordingly, the district redesigned the park last year through a design process based on residents’ opinions, creating five themed gardens that stimulate the five senses.
They established a ‘Rose Garden’ with 42 species and 5,340 seasonal roses planted on the existing lawn plaza, a ‘Visual Garden’ filled with clusters of colorful flowers, a ‘Floral Scent Garden’ with fresh scents from herbs and other flowers, a ‘Taste Garden’ featuring edible (medicinal) herbaceous plants, and a ‘Silver Grass Garden’ where the sound of silver grass creates a romantic atmosphere.
Additionally, park facilities such as ground fountains, complex playground equipment, jogging tracks, and exercise machines were greatly expanded so that families of all ages can enjoy the park together.
To utilize renewable energy, two solar rest shelters equipped with Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) were installed on top of the park’s shade structures, with ceiling lighting powered by solar energy allowing visitors to enjoy star gazing in the urban environment.
Furthermore, in cooperation with Korea Midland Power Co., a solar renewable energy ‘Solar Tree’ was installed that automatically changes the lighting color according to fine dust concentration and provides mobile phone charging functions, ensuring safety even in blind spots of the park.
From planning to construction, local residents participated in the project, transforming the ‘Geumcheon Green Plaza’ into a community harmony park that resonates with all generations. The name was also chosen directly by residents through a public contest.
Meanwhile, the district is promoting an ‘Ecological Park Creation Project’ in Siheung Valley adjacent to Geumcheon Green Plaza, aiming for completion by December this year. The plan includes restoring the stream and refurbishing the existing outdoor badminton court to create a space where anyone can freely exercise in nature.
