Support for Elevator Installation at Hannam Station in Yongsan-gu
Agreement Signed Earlier This Month Between National Railroad Corporation Seoul Metropolitan Headquarters and District to Support Safe Mobility for Disabled and Elderly... Project Cost 4.1 Billion KRW Shared 50:50 Between District and Corporation
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Yongsan-gu (Mayor Seongjanghyun) supports the installation of two 15-passenger elevators inside Hannam Station on the Gyeongui-Jungang Line (12-13 Dokseodang-ro 6-gil).
This is to assist safe and convenient movement for the disabled and elderly.
On the 1st, the district signed a 'Consignment Agreement for the Installation Project of Elevator Facilities at Hannam Station on the Gyeongui-Jungang Line' with the Korea National Railway Corporation Seoul Metropolitan Headquarters (Head Kim Yongdu).
The project location is two platforms at Hannam Station for both directions.
The project period is from the date of the agreement signing until December 2023. The project scale includes the installation of elevators and new passageways, with construction costs estimated at 4.1 billion KRW (including facility incidental expenses).
According to Article 13 of the Enforcement Decree of the Special Act on Metropolitan Area Wide Transportation Management, the district and the corporation share costs 50:50 for the construction and improvement of metropolitan railways. The total project cost may be partially adjusted based on the results of the detailed design service.
The design service and elevator installation construction will be directly undertaken by the corporation next year.
Hannam Station was established in 1980 on the site of Hangang-ri Station from the Japanese colonial period. There is only one exit, Exit 1, and movement from the 1st floor (ticket gate) to the 2nd floor (platform) is only possible by stairs.
Although there is a wheelchair lift for the disabled, many complain about its inconvenience. Safety concerns have also been continuously raised.
A district official said, “The installation of mobility convenience facilities at Hannam Station has been a long-standing wish of Hannam-dong residents,” adding, “It has been managed as a pledge project since the 6th local government term. After years of discussions, it is fortunate that the project has been decided.”
Since 2014, the district has continued discussions with the corporation regarding elevator installation at Hannam Station. Several joint on-site inspections were held. Ultimately, the two organizations promised cost-sharing only in August and signed the related agreement this month.
The district and the corporation will also install two 15-passenger elevators together at Seobinggo Station on the Gyeongui-Jungang Line. The construction cost is 3.4 billion KRW. As with Hannam Station, the district and the corporation will each bear 1.7 billion KRW. The corporation plans to start construction next year.
