[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] On the 4th, Jeong Young-ae, director of the Korea Women's Foundation, was appointed as the Minister of Gender Equality and Family.
Born in 1955, Jeong graduated from Jinmyeong Girls' High School in Seoul and Ewha Womans University with a degree in Sociology. She also completed graduate studies in Sociology at the same university and earned a Ph.D. in Women's Studies.
During former President Roh Moo-hyun's administration, she served as the Secretary for Balanced Personnel Affairs and Senior Secretary for Personnel Affairs. She was president of the Korean Association of Women's Studies in 2010 and served as the dean of Seoul Cyber University Graduate School for three years starting in 2013.
Under the Moon Jae-in administration, she was appointed as a civilian member of the Presidential Committee on Ageing Society and Population Policy and served as the vice president of Seoul Cyber University until August.
The Blue House stated, "As the first woman to earn a Ph.D. in Women's Studies and an expert in the field, she has led the advancement of women's rights in the area of women's welfare," adding, "Based on her expertise in Women's Studies and extensive policy experience, she will proactively address current issues such as strengthening responses to sexual violence and support measures for victims."
