Hoban Successfully Penetrates Banpocheon Watershed Separation Tunnel Using Advanced TBM Method
[Asia Economy Reporter Chunhee Lee] Hoban Industries has successfully completed the tunnel breakthrough for the Banpocheon watershed separation tunnel construction project in Seocho-gu, Seoul.
On the 3rd, Hoban Industries held a breakthrough ceremony for the Banpocheon separation tunnel construction in Seocho-gu, announcing this achievement. The event was held with strict quarantine measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, attended only by some officials including Kim Jinwon, President of Hoban Industries, the supervision team, and designers.
The Banpocheon separation tunnel project is part of Seoul City's "Comprehensive Drainage Improvement Measures for the Gangnam Station Area and Flood-Prone Areas." It is scheduled for completion in March 2022. Hoban Industries is responsible for constructing a total tunnel length of 1,162 meters in Banpo-dong, Seocho-gu (from Gyodae Station to Express Bus Terminal Station), of which 944 meters will be bored using a Gripper TBM (Gripper Tunnel Boring Machine).
The advanced tunnel boring machine, TBM, operates by rotating a 'cutter head' attached to its front to break and excavate rock while boring the tunnel. The Gripper TBM introduced by Hoban Industries for this project has a boring diameter of 8 meters, the largest size among TBM equipment used in Seoul.
In particular, this project required a Gripper TBM that could minimize the impact on the original ground because the site is surrounded by densely populated residential areas such as apartments and is close to Seoul Metropolitan Subway Line 3. Compared to the conventional blasting method (NATM) that uses explosives, the Gripper TBM produces less noise, dust, and vibration, making it excellent in terms of environmental and safety aspects, and it enables stable excavation even in rocky terrain.

Kim Jinwon, President of Hoban Industries, said, "The Gripper TBM owned by Hoban Industries is suitable for tunnel construction projects that require minimizing environmental damage such as noise, dust, and vibration," and added, "With the successful breakthrough of the Banpocheon separation tunnel, it is expected that flood response capabilities in the Gangnam Station area and surrounding regions will improve."
