Hanwha Systems Achieves Top Grade in Global Research and Development Capability Evaluation
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Hanwha Systems announced on the 2nd that it received the highest grade in the latest version of the internationally recognized research and development (R&D) capability evaluation standard, 'CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration)'.
CMMI is a global software and system quality management capability evaluation certification model developed by the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University in the United States, commissioned by the U.S. Department of Defense. This certification comprehensively evaluates an organization's capabilities in software development and project management.
Hanwha Systems has consecutively obtained the highest level, Level 5, certification five times since 2009 under the previous CMMI version 1.3. Additionally, it has been working on certification for the newly revised version 2.0 in line with the expiration of the CMMI certification in 2020.
The CMMI version 2.0 certification requires meeting business and technical requirements across the entire defense R&D sector, including not only weapon system R&D projects but also applied research and test development.
Hanwha Systems explained that it has improved its R&D processes based on CMMI and internalized a quantitative management system to maximize work efficiency and innovation activities.
Hanwha Systems met 188 audit requirements across 20 CMMI areas and received the highest grade, becoming the first in Korea to obtain this certification as of the certification date (October 16).
It is also the first case in Korea to receive certification across all areas, including CMMI partner management, and the 10th worldwide.
Hanwha Systems stated that it is the first global defense company to receive the highest grade certification for CMMI 2.0. Companies such as Lockheed Martin and Raytheon in the U.S. and BAE Systems in the U.K. currently hold Level 5 certification for the previous CMMI version 1.3.
Currently, 66% of Hanwha Systems' employees in the defense sector work in R&D and technical fields, of which 58% are at the master's or doctoral level or higher.
Based on its excellent R&D capabilities, Hanwha Systems announced that it will successfully carry out major domestic defense industry projects such as the AESA radar, a core mission equipment of the Korean fighter jet KFX, and the combat system of the Korean next-generation destroyer (KDDX), aiming to leap forward as a world-class defense company.
