Daewoo Construction Develops Risk Analysis Program Utilizing AI
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] Daewoo E&C announced on the 2nd that it has developed ‘DAIA (Daewoo A.I Documents Analysis Program)’, the construction industry’s first risk analysis program for technical documents using artificial intelligence (AI).
When bidding overseas, many personnel and a lot of time are invested in analyzing and reviewing technical documents, but due to the short preparation period for bids, there have been many cases where there is insufficient time to thoroughly review bid documents that range from thousands to tens of thousands of pages.
The newly introduced intelligent analysis program analyzes and reviews risks in technical documents by utilizing ‘ontology, which is the representation of existing objects and relationships between objects and various concepts in a form that computers can process’, enabling the computer to understand the concepts of words.
This program uses AI algorithms to identify risky parts within bid documents and analyzes potential risk factors in advance to provide them to bid reviewers. Users can immediately check past success and failure cases from similar projects related to the risk factors and expert advice.
The core algorithm of the DAIA program analyzes sentences based on technical and field-specific correlations between words and knowledge processing content between ontologies, linking pre-input solutions as annotations.
Constraints arising in this process are optimized through machine learning techniques. Daewoo E&C has currently filed two patents related to this program: a digital construction information building system and a construction document analysis method, contributing to technological advancement.
This program was implemented based on Daewoo E&C’s overseas civil engineering projects. It was pilot-tested using bid documents for the Hong Kong Panling Road project, a four-lane elevated highway construction connecting an existing highway and a new town in the northern region of Hong Kong, which was awarded in September. It is planned to be applied to many overseas bids in the future.

A Daewoo E&C official said, “It will shorten the review period of technical documents, pre-examine risk factors to improve design quality, and help proactive risk prevention,” adding, “We plan to expand the application of AI technology in the construction field and create a data-driven decision-making system suitable for the 4th industrial revolution.”
