Majang Livestock Market Odor "Now Over~"
Seongdong-gu to Fully Complete Long-Term Project 'Majang-dong Area Flood Relief Project' by November... 3.8km Public Sewer Line Maintenance around Majang Livestock Market, Majang Underpass, and Majang Elementary School Areas
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) has fully completed the "Majang-dong Area Flood Relief Project," which has been underway since 2016 to resolve the chronic issues of sewage flooding and odor problems in Majang-dong, on the 27th.
Majang-dong is home to the largest livestock market in the Seoul metropolitan area, the "Majang Livestock Market," where various animal fats, by-products, and debris accumulated in the aging sewage pipes, causing difficulties in sewage treatment.
Flood damage and odors caused by poor sewage treatment were major complaints from nearby residents and visitors to the livestock market. Although dredging work to remove sediment was periodically carried out, there were limitations in fundamentally solving the problems of the long-neglected aging sewage pipes.
To address the issue in earnest, the district launched a large-scale "Majang-dong Flood Relief Project" in 2016. First, the "Majang-dong Livestock Market Surrounding Flood Relief Project" was carried out in three phases until 2018. Since last year, in connection with the Majang-dong Urban Regeneration Project, four flood relief projects in total were completed: the "Majang Livestock Market Surrounding Aging and Poor Sewage Pipe Maintenance," the "Majang Underpass Surrounding Drainage System Improvement," and the "Majang Elementary School Surrounding Sewage Network Improvement."
With a total investment of 16.7 billion KRW from the Seoul city budget, a total of 3.8 km of public sewage pipes were maintained. The drainage system in the Majang underpass, Majang Elementary School, and Majang Livestock Market areas, which had suffered from sewage backflow or basement flooding during every rainy season or heavy rain, was improved, completely resolving issues such as flood damage, road subsidence, and sewage odor.
A district official stated, "Since the construction lasted for a long time, inconvenience due to noise and dust was inevitable. We made efforts to inform residents of the purpose and effects of the construction through residents' briefings and sought their cooperation," adding, "Thanks to the encouragement and understanding of local residents and merchants, we were able to successfully complete the project."
Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, "With the maintenance of underground infrastructure that had been neglected due to local conditions, the Majang Urban Regeneration Project is expected to gain more momentum," and added, "From now on, Majang-dong will shed its outdated image and be reborn as the number one clean and livable neighborhood."
