Jung Mong-gu, Honorary Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, Discharged After 4 Months
[Asia Economy Reporter Su-yeon Woo] Chung Mong-koo, Honorary Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, who had been hospitalized for treatment of a chronic illness, was discharged on the 27th after more than four months of hospitalization.
According to business circles, Honorary Chairman Chung was discharged that morning and is known to be resting at his home in Hannam-dong, Seoul.
Honorary Chairman Chung had been receiving inpatient treatment at Asan Medical Center in Seoul since mid-July due to colonic diverticulitis. Although he was initially scheduled to be discharged once the treatment was completed, the hospitalization period was extended considering his advanced age and the COVID-19 situation.
Born in 1938, Honorary Chairman Chung stepped down on the 14th of last month, handing over all management of the group to his son, Chairman Chung Eui-sun, and becoming Honorary Chairman. This marked 21 years since he became chairman of Hyundai Motor's board in 1999, and 20 years since he successfully separated the Hyundai Motor Group into affiliates after the "Prince's Rebellion" in 2000. Honorary Chairman Chung has not appeared in public since the National Assembly's state audit investigating the 2016 political scandal.
It is also known that around the last Chuseok holiday, Honorary Chairman Chung urged Chairman Chung to overcome the economic crisis and lead future innovation. Shortly after his inauguration last month, Chairman Chung said, "(Honorary Chairman Chung) has always emphasized quality and often told me to work diligently and stay healthy," adding, "I consider these his words of advice."
