Apple partner Foxconn's first 'Decoupling from China'... Partial production in Vietnam
Taiwanese Media Reports Assembly Lines for iPad and Others Moving to Vietnam
Relocation Requested by Apple, Production to Begin in First Half of Next Year
[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Jo Young-shin] Some of the production lines of Taiwan's Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision), the world's largest electronics contract manufacturer, in China are reportedly being relocated to Vietnam at Apple's request, according to Taiwanese media on the 27th.
As the Trump administration in the U.S. announced plans to impose additional tariffs on Chinese products amid the U.S.-China conflict, it is seen as a move by Apple to actively pursue relocating the production bases of products such as the iPad from China to other locations.
According to Taiwan's United Daily News and others, Foxconn will move the assembly lines for the 'iPad' and the laptop computer 'MacBook' to Bac Giang Province in northeastern Vietnam at Apple's request.
Currently, Foxconn is building assembly lines for the iPad and MacBook at its Bac Giang factory in Vietnam, and production is expected to begin in the first half of next year.
Taiwanese media reported that this move will mark the first time the iPad is produced outside of China.
Additionally, the establishment of a subsidiary in Vietnam with an investment of $270 million (approximately 298.26 billion KRW) on the 24th is seen as a strategic step to expand production in the region.
Foxconn's $1 billion (about 1.1 trillion KRW) investment to expand its factory in India is also interpreted in the same context.
Regarding this, Foxconn stated that it "will not comment on any matters related to customers or products."
