[Summary] "The Miracle Makers Are ARMY" BTS Enters Grammy 'Best Pop Group Performance' Nominee List
The First in the History of Korean Popular Music
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ga-yeon] The group BTS has been nominated for the Grammy Awards, the most prestigious music awards ceremony in the United States.
The Recording Academy, which hosts the Grammy Awards, announced on the 24th (local time) that BTS's "Dynamite" has been nominated for the 63rd Grammy Awards in the "Best Pop Duo/Group Performance" category.
On the 25th, BTS posted on their official Twitter, "We thank everyone who listened to and empathized with our music during difficult times," and expressed their feelings, saying, "Above all, it is ARMY who made the miracle of becoming Grammy-nominated artists. We are always grateful and love you."
They also tagged the Recording Academy and said, "Thank you for giving us such a great honor."
"Dynamite," released on August 21, previously reached number one on the US Billboard main singles chart, the "Hot 100." It has remained in the top ranks of the chart even recently, surpassing 12 weeks since its release.
While Korean classical or traditional music figures have been nominated or awarded before, this is the first time for a nomination in popular music. BTS was invited as presenters at the 61st Grammy Awards and as performers?the first Asian artists to do so?at the 62nd Grammy Awards.
Other nominees in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category include Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande's "Rain on Me," J Balvin, Dua Lipa, Bad Bunny & Tainy’s "Un Dia," Justin Bieber and Quavo's "Intentions," and Taylor Swift and Bon Iver's "Exile."
This category is a subcategory of the pop genre awards, established in 2012. Although it is not one of the four major general field awards, it is considered one of the main categories. It honors musicians who have achieved outstanding artistic accomplishments in pop vocal or instrumental performances as duos, groups, or collaborations.
Past recipients of this award include rapper Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus's "Old Town Road Remix," Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's "Shallow," American rock band Portugal. The Man's "Feel It Still," and Twenty One Pilots' "Stressed Out."
Alongside the Grammy Awards, BTS has won the American Music Awards (AMAs) and Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs)?two of the three major US popular music awards?for three consecutive years and four consecutive years, respectively. Winning the Grammy would complete their "Grand Slam."
BTS members have repeatedly stated that their goal is to be nominated and win a Grammy, drawing fans’ attention. In an interview with the US magazine Esquire released on the 23rd, RM said, "We want to be nominated for the Grammys and, if possible, win an award," adding, "I think the Grammy is the final destination of our journey in the US."
Meanwhile, the Grammy Awards will be held on January 31 next year (local time).
