Third Departure of Shandong Aircraft Carrier, Moves to South China Sea After Live-Fire Drills Near Taiwan Strait
[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Jo Young-shin] China's state-run media Global Times harshly criticized the secret visit of a U.S. general to Taiwan on the 24th, calling it U.S. President Donald Trump's "final madness."
On the same day, Global Times and Huanqiu Shibao published articles reporting that China's aircraft carrier, the 'Shandong Carrier,' departed from Dalian Port in Liaoning Province for its third live-fire exercise this year, heading toward the Taiwan Strait vicinity.
In their commentary, Global Times and Huanqiu Shibao noted that the Taiwan authorities did not officially confirm the visit of U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Sudamon, who is responsible for military intelligence in the Asia-Pacific region, and criticized the Taiwan authorities.
Global Times pointed out, "Recently, the U.S. has been expanding its collusion with Taiwan," adding, "President Trump is trying to concretize the Biden administration's Taiwan policy framework together with Tsai Ing-wen."
Global Times further stated, "President Trump's term is now less than two months away," criticizing, "We do not know how much more of this final madness the U.S. and Taiwan will display."
It also claimed, "The U.S. and Taiwan are planning to further strengthen bilateral relations," and "The U.S. is using its relationship with Taiwan as leverage to exert greater pressure on China." At the same time, it emphasized, "China holds absolute military superiority," and "The initiative regarding whether to take military action against Taiwan and what kind of punishment to impose also lies with China."
Along with the critical articles against the U.S. and Taiwan, Global Times reported that the Shandong aircraft carrier has set sail and will conduct live military exercises near Taiwan's waters until December 16. The media added that this is the third training exercise for the Shandong carrier following those in May and September.
The media also raised the possibility that after completing the training, the Shandong carrier might return to the naval base near Hainan in the South China Sea.
