Incheon Seunggi Wastewater Treatment Plant to Be Moved Underground by 2028... Capacity of 250,000 Tons per Day
Construction Begins in 2023... Upper Structure to Include Park and Resident Convenience Facilities
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] The modernization project of the Incheon Seunggi Public Sewage Treatment Plant, which has faced ongoing issues such as reduced treatment capacity and odor problems due to facility aging and wastewater inflow from Namdong Industrial Complex, is set to begin in earnest.
Incheon City announced that it will officially notify the basic plan for the Seunggi Sewage Treatment Plant modernization project as of the 23rd.
This project involves completely undergrounding the water treatment facility with a daily treatment capacity of 250,000 tons at its current location and installing convenience facilities for residents above ground.
The total project cost is 298 billion KRW, with construction starting in 2023 and completion targeted for 2028. The city plans to actively coordinate with central government ministries to secure maximum national funding support.
The Seunggi Sewage Treatment Plant treats sewage from parts of Yeonsu-gu, Michuhol-gu, and Namdong-gu. Since its completion in 1995, it has operated without major facility improvements except for an advanced treatment upgrade in 2007.
However, with the inflow of high-concentration wastewater from Namdong Industrial Complex and increased sewage volume, odor problems have occurred, highlighting the limitations of the existing facility in fully treating pollutants.
The city expects that upon completion of this project, the plant will reliably treat 250,000 tons of sewage per day, significantly reduce odor emissions, and improve water quality.
