[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Ahn Cheol-soo, leader of the People’s Party, stated on the 22nd regarding the opposition innovation platform, “People who are not interested in politics have no favorable feelings toward the main opposition party,” and added, “It’s about creating a framework not only for the main opposition party but also for centrists and progressives who desire reasonable reform.”
On the same day, in the first episode of ‘Ahn Cheol-soo x Kim Se-yeon Innovation Talk - Joining Forces for Opposition Innovation’ released on his YouTube channel, Ahn said, “There are various forms ranging from loose alliances to the most rigid form of creating a party, and the term ‘platform’ encompasses all of these.” He added, “It has been known as ‘let’s create a party’ or something like that, but I thought that wasn’t a bad idea either.”
Former People Power Party lawmaker Kim Se-yeon responded to Ahn’s proposal by saying, “My first impression was that it was about competing to become a collaborator or friend who is close to the people’s lives and solves practical problems.” He continued, “I think creating a large platform for innovation competition that can function as a platform for dialogue and cooperation, rather than forcibly merging parties, could be a great help to our politics.”
Kim added, “After talking with Leader Ahn, I was glad to confirm that we share many similar thoughts,” and said, “Since I am currently stepping back from politics, I am always willing to support efforts with good intentions for the development of our national community.”
Both criticized the government and ruling party in unison. Ahn said, “With 180 seats, shouldn’t it be possible to carry out long-term reform tasks that have been difficult until now? But the hope turned into despair in just a month or two,” sharply criticizing, “In short, democracy is being destroyed.”
Ahn continued, “In the past, if there was a lack of ability or moral issues, people would first apologize, take measures, and feel ashamed, right? But this administration does not seem to show that. The fact that they do not feel shame and never admit wrongdoing is truly concerning,” he stated.
Former lawmaker Kim pointed out, “The Saenuri Party, which was once a decent centrist-conservative party, completely collapsed over time, resulting in a catastrophic outcome where even its own party members participated in impeachment. Now, although the current Democratic Party government may differ in approach from the previous government, it raises doubts about whether the essence is truly different.”
