Three UN Peacekeeping Soldiers Receive Commendation from Foreign Minister
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the 19th, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs held an award ceremony for three Korean soldiers who contributed to UN peacekeeping operations at the Open Communication Center on the first floor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building in Doryeom-dong, Seoul, presided over by Director Ham Sang-wook of the Multilateral Diplomacy Coordination Office.
The three award recipients were recognized for their contributions to UN peacekeeping operations and the development of bilateral relations between Korea and Lebanon and South Sudan while serving in the Dongmyeong Unit deployed to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the Hanbit Unit deployed to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
The Dongmyeong Unit is a 300-member special forces-centered unit dispatched to UNIFIL, active since 2007. The Hanbit Unit is a 300-member engineering-centered unit dispatched to UNMISS, active since 2013.
Director Ham expressed gratitude for the efforts and dedication of the awarded soldiers and urged them to utilize their experience in UN peacekeeping operations to contribute to peace and security in the Republic of Korea and the international community.

Since dispatching an engineering unit to the United Nations Operation in Somalia II (UNOSOM II) in 1993, the Korean government has deployed its military units seven times and has sent a total of 18,022 personnel, including 576 currently deployed to five UN PKO missions. Based on this, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans to host the Peacekeeping Ministerial Meeting in Seoul in 2021.
