Police Agency and Ministry of Science and ICT Contest Awards Ceremony
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] On the afternoon of the 19th, the National Police Agency and the Ministry of Science and ICT held the awards ceremony for the '6th Science Policing Idea Contest' at the National Police Agency building in Migeun-dong, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul.
Now in its sixth year, the contest was held from July 6 to September 15, divided into two categories: general and police divisions. It aimed to advance the policing system using science and information and communication technology (ICT) and to realize a safe society through the development of 'science policing.' A total of 283 ideas (117 from the general division and 166 from the police division) were submitted, and after two rounds of evaluation, 16 final award-winning works were selected.
In the general division, the team led by Kim Min-ji, who proposed the 'SYN (Safe Your Night) Sticker' that can detect narcotics in beverages through color changes, and the team led by Kim Ji-hyun, who proposed the 'AI Unmanned Access System' using deep learning-based optical character recognition (OCR) to prevent forgery and misuse of identification cards, were each awarded the grand prize (Minister of Science and ICT Award, National Police Agency Commissioner Award).
Additionally, in the police division, the team led by Sergeant Kang Seok-jin, who proposed the 'Acrylic Optical Filter Evidence Photography Stand for Fingerprint Shooting' to integrate existing equipment and improve efficiency in suspect identification and arrest at crime scenes, and the team led by Police Officer Moon Hye-rim, who proposed the 'Region-customized DNA Fluorescent Paste for Preventing Invasive Crimes' using fluorescent paste mixed with DNA to enhance the speed and accuracy of criminal tracking, were selected for the grand prize.

Furthermore, the police explained that many creative ideas reflected this year’s novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the 'Min-sik Act.' The police plan to utilize the ideas proposed this time for establishing policing policies and planning new projects in policing research and development (R&D).
