Can Organizing Your Mailbox Help Practice Low-Carbon Living?
Jongno-gu Implements Nation's First 'Top 10 Guidelines for Reducing Digital Carbon Footprint' Among Basic Local Governments... Includes 'Using Computer Power-Saving Programs' and 'Organizing Mail and Document Boxes'
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jongno-gu (Mayor Kim Young-jong) is implementing the nation's first 'Top 10 Guidelines for Reducing Digital Carbon Footprint' from this month among basic local governments to create a sustainable community and respond to climate change.
This is part of a sustainable development practice project aimed at accelerating 'resource conservation for the next generation' and creating a 'breathable Jongno.'
The digital carbon footprint refers to the carbon emissions generated when using digital devices, which is also considered one of the causes of global warming.
Jongno-gu created these guidelines to reduce greenhouse gases through small habit changes that anyone can participate in.
The top 10 guidelines for reducing the digital carbon footprint include ▲using computer power-saving programs ▲organizing emails and document folders ▲blocking spam emails and messages ▲using bookmarks for frequently visited sites ▲blocking automatic video playback ▲downloading instead of streaming ▲using economical printing programs ▲extending the replacement cycle of electronic devices ▲lowering monitor resolution ▲turning off electronic devices when leaving work.
Starting with employees of the district office and its affiliated organizations, the plan is to gradually expand the low-carbon lifestyle campaign to local businesses, schools, religious groups, and general residents.
The target is to reduce CO2 by 33,748 kg annually and achieve the effect of planting 5,113 trees. This is based on about 1,300 district office employees and refers to 2013 data from the National Institute of Forest Science, which states that a 30-year-old pine tree absorbs 6.6 kg of CO2 annually.
The district plans to work toward achieving a '500,000-ton reduction in greenhouse gases by 2025' in connection with the '1·1·1 Lifestyle Practice Campaign.' The 1·1·1 Lifestyle Practice Campaign means that one person reduces 1 ton of greenhouse gases in one year to create a sustainable city where people and the environment coexist.
