Seoul Gangseo-gu Distributes '2021 Calendar Made with Children's Drawings'
‘Child-Friendly City Drawing and Slogan Contest’ Held, 36 Works Selected... 3,000 Copies of 2021 Calendar Made and Distributed Using Selected Works
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] We rarely get to see sparkling stars in the city. The reason is air pollution, one of the environmental pollutions. Because of environmental pollution, the air gets contaminated, and due to that air, the stars become invisible. So, the eco-friendly city I imagine is one where the night sky in Seoul is filled with sparkling stars. Recently, the air quality has improved due to COVID-19, and I hope it gets even better so we can see more stars.

Gangseo-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Roh Hyun-song) announced that it will distribute the ‘Child-Friendly City Calendar’ created as part of efforts to make a city where all children are happy.
In June, the district held the ‘Child-Friendly City Calendar Drawing and Inscription Contest’ and produced the 2021 calendar featuring a total of 36 winning works (28 drawings, 8 inscriptions) that reflect the hopes and expectations of children and adolescents.
A total of 105 works from preschool children, elementary, middle, and high school students were submitted to the contest. Fifteen members of the Gangseo-gu Child Participation Committee served as judges, and from submission to selection, the process was carried out by the children and adolescents of Gangseo-gu.
The calendar contains various images of Gangseo-gu, such as the four seasons of our neighborhood, the Gangseo-gu I wish for, and the play spaces I want.
You can see Gangseo-gu as viewed by children, including Gaehwasan Mountain, Seoul Botanic Park, and Yangcheon Hyanggyo Confucian School, as well as play spaces children wish to have in Gangseo-gu, such as a penguin zoo, water playground, and RC car park.
Drawings of children riding an elephant bus to school and riding whales showcase their rich imagination, while drawings and inscriptions expressing the desire to see stars and concern for the environment reveal the pure hearts of children.
The calendar, completed in two designs, will be mailed on the 19th to students who participated in the contest and child judges, and distributed on the 21st to children participating in the ‘Low Photo Exhibition’ event during Child Rights Week held at Gimpo Airport Lotte Mall.
Based on opinions from the 2020 Child-Friendly City (Child Rights Status) survey that officials who create and implement policies should first raise awareness of child rights, the district decided to distribute the calendar to employees as well so they can reconsider what a ‘city where children are happy’ means.
A district official said, “It was enjoyable to see the children’s imagination, observation skills, and sincere works while making the calendar,” and added, “I hope the Child-Friendly City Calendar will be an opportunity to empathize with the world as seen by children and to think about a city where children are happy.”
