The Jeju Heritage Science Award is a system established to encourage scientists who protect and elevate Jeju's heritage, inheriting the spirit of love for Jeju of Amorepacific founder Chairman Seonghwan Seo, the previous generation chairman. This year's award ceremony was held at Seollokhyangsil in Dolsongi Tea Plantation, Dosun-dong, Seogwipo-si, Jeju Island, where Amorepacific first planted and cultivated Jeju green tea, adding significance to the event.
The awardee, Professor Haenam Hyun, has been working for over 30 years at the Department of Bioindustry, College of Life Resources Science, Jeju National University, elucidating the characteristics of Jeju volcanic ash soil. His major research achievements include the silicon specificity of volcanic ash soil and its relationship with groundwater, the specificity of soil organic matter, and crop absorption of heavy metals in soil using continuous extraction methods. He also conducts agricultural education annually for about 10,000 farmers and actively addresses farmers' difficulties by operating a Naver Band called 'Stories of Soil, Fertilizer, and Bugs.'
At the award ceremony, Jin-ho Lee, Chairman of the Innisfree Mo-eum Foundation, stated, “We highly appreciate Professor Haenam Hyun's contributions to preserving the value of Jeju soil and enhancing farmers' knowledge,” and added, “We hope he will continue to contribute to the production of high-quality Jeju agricultural products through ongoing soil research and educational activities.”
