At the council meeting, Governor Kim Young-rok of Jeollanam-do, Mayor Kim Jong-sik of Mokpo, County Governor Park Woo-ryang of Shinan, along with 12 representatives from KEPCO and various power generation companies attended, discussing mutual cooperation matters for the successful promotion of the offshore wind power project in the Shinan area.
In particular, to create Jeonnam-style win-win jobs through the establishment of an offshore wind power industrial ecosystem, they pledged mutual cooperation to attract offshore wind power equipment companies within the province and actively cooperate in purchasing products produced by local offshore wind power parts and equipment manufacturing companies.
Furthermore, they vowed to work together on efforts such as sharing benefits with residents, preparing government policies, and proposing institutional improvements to stabilize the offshore wind power generation project in the future.
This council meeting was significant as it was the first time that local governments, KEPCO, and the presidents of power generation companies gathered in one place to confirm their shared goal and determination for the success of the Shinan offshore wind power Phase 1 project, creating a model precedent for strengthening autonomous cooperation between local governments and power companies.
Governor Kim Young-rok of Jeollanam-do stated, “Through today’s council meeting, a stepping stone has been laid for this project to move forward,” and added, “We will continue to promote the project rapidly through close mutual cooperation and exchange among the government, local governments, power companies, and manufacturers.”
He also added, “We will surely succeed in the Shinan offshore wind power complex project, the world’s largest single complex, to establish a green hydrogen ecosystem and leap forward as a global hub for the hydrogen industry.”
Mayor Kim Jong-sik of Mokpo said, “The transition to renewable energy represented by offshore wind power is a core project of the government’s Renewable Energy 3020 policy and the Green New Deal to overcome post-COVID-19,” and emphasized, “Since global companies are declaring that they will only purchase renewable energy products, it is now not a choice but a necessity.”
He continued, “We will spare no cooperation from the local government to ensure the project’s success and will actively support offshore wind power equipment manufacturers investing around Mokpo New Port.”
