Gangdong-gu Art Museum Construction in 2024
Appointment Ceremony of Gangdong-gu Public Art Museum Advisory Committee on the 13th... Full-scale Construction of Public Art Museum... Utilizing Guamseowon Site in Amsa Historical Park, Targeting July 2022 Groundbreaking
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] A public art museum will be established in Gangdong-gu, the only district in the southeastern area of Seoul without a national or public art museum.
Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) announced that it will actively proceed with the construction of a district-run art museum to expand residents' rights to enjoy culture and create a foundation for nurturing the cultural and artistic ecosystem.
With large-scale reconstruction and development projects, the population is expected to increase by 100,000 within the next three years, growing into a city of 550,000 residents. The aim is to expand the insufficient cultural infrastructure so that all residents can enjoy diverse cultural activities.
To build the district-run art museum, the district appointed an advisory committee composed of experts from various fields on the 13th to gather opinions on the basic plan and operation of the museum.
The Gangdong District Art Museum is planned to be constructed on the site of Guamseowon within Amsa History Park (around 132 Amsa-dong), with construction starting in July 2022 and aiming to open in the first half of 2024.
With a total floor area of 2,500㎡, the site, which had remained a long-term unexecuted urban planning facility for 13 years, will be transformed into a complex cultural space where citizens can enjoy and create cultural and artistic works.
Additionally, a high-quality public architectural structure will be developed to harmonize well with the local history and natural ecology, including the nearby Seoul Amsa-dong archaeological site and Amsa History Park.
Furthermore, moving away from uniform and simple exhibitions, the museum plans to explore dynamic content from multiple angles, creating a converged exhibition space utilizing digital technology and VR (virtual reality) to lead the post-COVID-19 era, making it a museum that citizens can enjoy 365 days a year.
To concretize these plans, the district began a basic concept and feasibility study for the district-run art museum on the 5th of last month. The study will be conducted until March next year and includes reviewing the scale and economic feasibility of the museum, proposing exhibition and operation plans, basic architectural plans, and performing preliminary procedures.
Based on the results, the museum will complete construction after going through preliminary evaluations by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, investment reviews by Seoul City, deliberations by the Seoul City Urban Park Committee, and basic and detailed design phases.

Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, stated, “The district-run art museum will lower the threshold for residents to enjoy culture and arts nearby and contribute to creating a grassroots cultural and artistic ecosystem for artists. We will do our best to develop it into a historic cultural tourism landmark that enhances residents' quality of life.”
