[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Eun-young] A wealthy individual from mainland China, known to be close to Alibaba founder Jack Ma, was stabbed with a weapon by assailants in downtown Hong Kong.
According to foreign media on the 14th, three assailants suddenly rushed at businessman Chen Fenglei and another man surnamed Fang, who were walking out of the upscale club Huangchaohui (皇朝會) in Wanchai (灣仔) in the early morning, and attacked them with weapons.
Chen Fenglei and Mr. Fang were taken to the hospital for treatment and are reported to be conscious with no serious threat to their lives.
The club where the incident occurred is a high-end members-only club frequented by wealthy individuals, located in the same building as the 5-star Hong Kong Hyatt Hotel.
Born in 1976, Chen Fenglei is a businessman from Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China, and currently holds a Hong Kong resident identity card.
He is known to be close to Alibaba founder Jack Ma and is also a shareholder in Ant Group, a key unlisted affiliate of Alibaba.
Additionally, he has made personal donations of 10 million yuan (approximately 1.68 billion KRW) during the Wenchuan and Yushu earthquakes and the flooding in his hometown Ningbo. He is known for publicly revealing his name when purchasing expensive items at Hong Kong public auctions, earning him the nickname "Qianduoduo," meaning "has a lot of money."
