[Asia Economy reporters Ryu Jeong-min and Son Seon-hee] On the 11th, President Moon Jae-in will attend the 'Farmers' Day event.' This marks the first time in 17 years that a president has attended the Farmers' Day event since then-President Roh Moo-hyun in 2003.
Im Se-eun, deputy spokesperson of the Blue House, said in a briefing at the Chuncheon Press Center on the 10th, "Tomorrow, November 11th at 11 a.m., President Moon Jae-in will attend the 25th 'Farmers' Day' for the first time in 17 years. This is the first attendance since the 8th event in 2003 when President Roh Moo-hyun attended."
Deputy Spokesperson Im explained, "President Moon has emphasized that through agriculture and fisheries, we learn the laws of nature, and that the excellent nation that values community was built on the cooperative spirit formed through agriculture and fisheries. He has stressed that the future of rural areas is the future of the Republic of Korea."
Tomorrow’s Farmers' Day event will invite farmers to the Blue House. Considering the difficulties farmers have faced this year due to floods, African swine fever, and COVID-19, the Blue House organized this event to boost morale and honor their responsibility for providing safe food.
Deputy Spokesperson Im said, "The Blue House, where the event will be held, was formerly the rear garden of Gyeongbokgung Palace. It has traditionally housed Chingyeongjeon and Gyeongnongjae to pray for abundant harvests and observe crop conditions. It also features the ‘Paldo Baemi,’ symbolizing the eight provinces, where grain seeds from each province were planted to monitor harvests."
Along with the event, the first product combining high-quality representative rice varieties from the eight provinces nationwide, ‘Korea Rice,’ 5kg bags will be sold live on public home shopping. The broadcast will take place on a special stage at the Blue House Sarangchae, overlooking the ‘Paldo Baemi.’
President Moon is scheduled to have lunch featuring the special ‘Korea Rice’ on the day.
Deputy Spokesperson Im stated, "The rice varieties from the eight provinces nationwide include high-quality representative rice such as Haedeul from Gyeonggi, Odae from Gangwon, Cham Dream from Chungbuk, Samgwang from Chungnam, Ilpum from Gyeongbuk, Hyeonghojinmi from Gyeongnam, Sindongjin from Jeonbuk, and Saeilmi from Jeonnam. The product will be sold in a limited quantity of 5,000."
Meanwhile, before the event, a special congratulatory video message for Farmers' Day from David Beasley, Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize-winning organization, will be introduced.
Deputy Spokesperson Im said, "South Korea was once the largest recipient of aid from the WFP among UN organizations, but now it acts as a donor in the international community. (Executive Director Beasley) is expected to say that the organization’s Nobel Peace Prize was made possible thanks to South Korea’s generous support."
