Hanyeonong Jeonnam Province Federation Holds 'Sharing Garaetteok' Event
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Jeonnam Provincial Federation of the Korean Women Farmers Association (President Kim Nongsun) organized a ‘Garaetteok Sharing Event’ as part of a rice consumption promotion event ahead of Farmers' Day.
According to Jeonnam Province on the 10th, the Jeonnam Provincial Federation of the Korean Women Farmers Association held a generous event at the NH Jeonnam Regional Headquarters Hanaro Mart parking lot, distributing garaetteok made from Jeonnam-grown rice to citizens.
November 11 is commonly known as Pepero Day, but since 2006, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs designated it as Garaetteok Day to commemorate Farmers' Day, symbolizing rural areas and farmers through Korea’s traditional white rice cake in the shape of a long stick. This year marks the 15th anniversary.
As part of the Farmers' Day event, the Jeonnam Provincial Federation of the Korean Women Farmers Association visited Jeonnam Provincial Office, Jeonnam Provincial Council, Jeonnam Police Agency, and NH Jeonnam Regional Headquarters to deliver 100 boxes (480kg) of garaetteok.
President Kim Nongsun said, “Through the Garaetteok Day event, we hope that exchanging rice cakes made from our rice will help expand rice consumption,” adding, “We hope this event will support rice-producing farmers who are struggling due to COVID-19 and weather disasters.”
Jung Hayong, Director of Agricultural Policy at Jeonnam Province, stated, “Research shows that a rice-centered breakfast improves adolescents’ emotional stability and learning ability, as well as physical health,” and added, “We hope everyone enjoys plenty of Jeonnam rice through Garaetteok Day and has a healthy winter season.”
