Water Resources Corporation Receives Korea's First Eco-Friendly Certification for Floating Solar Power
Hapcheon Dam, Chungju Dam, and Boryeong Dam Power Receive 'Environmental Product Declaration' Certification
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Korea Water Resources Corporation announced on the 8th that it has received the 'Environmental Product Declaration' certification for floating solar power generation electricity for the first time in Korea.
The corporation stated that it received the certification from the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute on the 6th for the electricity generated by its floating solar power facilities.
This certification, overseen by the Ministry of Environment and operated by the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute, is a system that evaluates the environmental impact at all stages of a product or service's manufacturing, use, and disposal.
The corporation explained that this certification was granted after evaluating the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by electricity generated from floating solar power plants with a total capacity of 5.5MW located at Hapcheon Dam in Gyeongsangnam-do, Chungju Dam in Chungcheongbuk-do, and Boryeong Dam in Chungcheongnam-do.
The evaluation method calculates the greenhouse gas emissions per 1kWh of electricity generated (kgCO₂ per 1kWh) by summing emissions not only from the power generation process but also from the entire lifecycle of the floating solar power facilities, from construction to disposal.
According to the evaluation by the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute, Hapcheon Dam emitted 0.099kgCO₂/kWh, Boryeong Dam 0.112kgCO₂/kWh, and Chungju Dam 0.075kgCO₂/kWh of greenhouse gases per 1kWh of electricity generated.
The corporation explained, "The average emission from the three facilities is 0.095kgCO₂/kWh, which is a lower figure compared to coal-fired power generation's 0.992kgCO₂/kWh."
Through obtaining this certification, the corporation expects to gain momentum in expanding the distribution of floating solar power, one of the key projects of the Green New Deal. Since the environmental friendliness of floating solar power has been recognized by a nationally accredited institution, it will now be possible to accurately inform the public about it.
Park Jaehyun, President of Korea Water Resources Corporation, said, "At a time when a global energy transition is required to respond to climate change, eco-friendly energy is becoming not a choice but a necessity. We will do our best to create a successful case of the Korean-style Green New Deal that coexists with local communities as well as responds to climate change through the expansion of floating solar power."
