Please join us so that Jeju’s future can expand to the future of the Republic of Korea and the world, and connect to the future of the next generation.”
At 10:20 a.m. that day, Governor Won delivered the opening address at the 15th Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity (hereinafter Jeju Forum) held at Lotte Hotel Jeju, saying, “The entire globe’s life itself is changing due to COVID-19, which has spread as a pandemic,” and added, “There is talk that the world will change into pre-COVID and post-COVID eras, and we are now living with COVID.”
Governor Won stated, “In this era of great transformation and rapid acceleration, true resilience to overcome a risk society is cooperation,” emphasizing, “The way for us Homo sapiens to live has always been, is now, and will continue to be cooperation.”
He continued, “Integrated leadership that leads cooperation is the key to our recovery,” and added, “Let us all believe in the power of cooperation and move forward together into the future.”
Furthermore, he stressed, “The COVID-19 pandemic is a problem that can only be solved through international cooperation beyond the level of individual countries,” and expressed hope that “through this forum, a new paradigm of ‘human-centered security,’ where countries, humans, and nature coexist cleanly, safely, and develop together, will be derived.”
President Moon Jae-in, in a video keynote speech, said, “Jeju is an island of healing and peace, and the spirit of inclusion and coexistence of Jeju residents is the foundation and spirit of the launch of the Jeju Forum,” adding, “The power that has enabled the Jeju Forum to lead international discussions for peace and shared prosperity as a representative public forum in East Asia over the past 20 years was also the spirit of healing and peace achieved by Jeju residents.”
President Moon added, “One of the facts that COVID-19 has awakened humanity to is that neighbors must be healthy for me to be healthy,” and said, “Korea will practice universal human values to completely overcome COVID-19 and will strengthen solidarity and cooperation with the world.”
He continued, “Humanity is facing COVID-19 by considering the pain of neighbors as my own pain, and we will overcome COVID-19 through solidarity and cooperation and move toward a more inclusive and sustainable world,” expressing belief that “today’s Jeju Forum will be an important opportunity to share the wisdom, experience, and technology accumulated by humanity to overcome the common crises of COVID-19 and climate change.”
Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, in a congratulatory message, said, “Today, we are living in an era of uncertainty and going through very difficult times, but we must never succumb to the pandemic,” emphasizing, “Cooperation between humans and nations is no longer a matter of choice but a necessity, and we must mobilize all means and methods to fight against it.”
He also urged, “Please share your knowledge and insight so that wise choices and decisions for global peace and prosperity can be made at this Jeju Forum.”
UN Secretary-General Ant?nio Guterres expressed gratitude to the Jeju Forum, saying, “I thank the Jeju Forum for playing a constructive role in promoting multilateralism and the future of peace and prosperity worldwide, including the Korean Peninsula,” and said, “Let us all work together to create a safer, healthier, more sustainable, equitable, and peaceful world for everyone.”
Former U.S. President Bill Clinton said, “We have experienced that when joint efforts, will, and the shared resources supporting them come together, great changes can be made in a short time,” and stated, “Now, let us overcome COVID-19, rebuild the economy, and solve the enormous challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic together.”
On the second day of the Jeju Forum, November 6, a total of 18 sessions, including on-site and online sessions, are scheduled to be held.
