Trump's Complaint: "What's the Point of Participating in Vote Counting?"... "Election System Already Compromised"
On the 4th, Tweeted "Election System Damage, This Is What We Need to Discuss"
CNN "Legal Team's 'Meaningful Approach' Strategy Seems Unlikely to Succeed"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] As the vote counting for the 2020 U.S. presidential election is underway, President Donald Trump expressed dissatisfaction regarding his campaign's lawsuit to halt the counting process, which demanded 'meaningful access' during the vote counting. He said, "What good is that?" emphasizing concerns about the legitimacy of the election itself by stating that "the integrity of the election system has already been compromised."
On the same day, President Trump posted on his Twitter, "Our lawyers have been demanding meaningful access. But what good is this?" and added, "The integrity of our (election) system, the presidential election itself, has already been compromised. This is what we need to discuss."
Trump's remarks appear to refer to the Trump campaign's earlier lawsuit against the state of Michigan, requesting a halt to the vote counting "until meaningful access is allowed." 'Meaningful access' refers to the claim that the Republican side was not properly allowed to observe the counting process.
President Trump initially led Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden in early vote counts in some battleground states such as Michigan and Wisconsin, but was overtaken as the counting of mail-in ballots began in the later stages. In response, the Trump campaign filed a lawsuit to stop the counting in Michigan, citing the issue that Republicans were not properly allowed to observe the process.
CNN, citing a source, reported, "President Trump will allow his legal team to proceed with their strategy, but ultimately does not believe the method will succeed," and added, "He approved his legal team's strategy without much enthusiasm." Given the strong rhetoric targeting mail-in voting as a 'fraudulent election against the people,' the fact that the campaign filed a lawsuit to halt counting using only the term 'meaningful access' has been interpreted as a sign of dissatisfaction.
The British daily The Independent interpreted that President Trump emphasized the damage to the integrity of the U.S. election system, ultimately reiterating his claim that this election is fraudulent. Some have speculated that President Trump may have given up hope for a favorable outcome from the lawsuits.
In another tweet, President Trump also claimed that ballots were secretly discarded in Michigan. He stated, "I claim victory in Pennsylvania (which does not allow legal observers), Georgia, and North Carolina, where I led by a large margin," and added, "If, as widely reported, a large number of ballots were secretly discarded, I also claim victory in Michigan."

Twitter imposed a restriction on President Trump's tweet alleging that ballots were discarded. Twitter hid the tweet so that users must click a 'View' button to read it, and also blocked others from sharing or linking to the tweet. In the notice explaining the restriction, Twitter stated, "Some or all of the content in this tweet may cause confusion about how to participate in an election or other civic process."
