[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Jiwon] The government is launching the 'Saetteulmaeul Project' to improve the quality of life and revitalize communities in residents' areas such as Geoje and Jinju in Gyeongnam.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the National Balanced Development Committee signed a memorandum of understanding among related organizations on the 5th to ensure the smooth implementation of the Saetteulmaeul Project and announced this year's project sites.

The Saetteulmaeul Project supports living infrastructure, home repairs, care services, and jobs in extremely poor residential areas within cities, such as hillside neighborhoods. In addition to government subsidies, it helps establish a sustainable self-reliance foundation by supporting materials and expertise through private cooperation.

This year's project sites include a total of 11 locations: 5 for welfare community revitalization projects and 6 for old housing improvement projects.

The welfare community revitalization project, starting for the first time this year, is implemented by the Korea National Council on Social Welfare with donation sponsorship from Korea Western Power. It identifies village issues such as jobs, childcare, culture, and environment within Saetteulmaeul areas and solves problems through resident consulting and community project development.

In Geoje, a village profit model linked to rooftop waterproofing projects will be created, and in Jinju, health management and care services will be implemented in cooperation with local universities. In Jeonju, village culture and economic revitalization will be promoted through vacant houses.

The old housing improvement project will be implemented by Korea Habitat through in-kind materials from private companies and labor cost support from the Housing and Urban Guarantee Corporation (HUG).

Choi Imrak, Director of Urban Policy at the Ministry of Land, said, "We will continuously cooperate with support organizations to ensure that practical benefits are provided to residents in the selected areas and do our best to expand support in the future."
