On that day, Hong posted on his Facebook, "The trigger for our collapse was the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye. The conservative right-wing, divided over the pros and cons of the impeachment, has spent nearly four years in more conflict and strife among ourselves than against the Democratic Party," he said.
Hong stated, "While we have been divided, we have suffered crushing defeats in every election, and the Moon Jae-in administration is running rampant," adding, "It has become clear that we cannot win unless we unite. Now is the time to put aside the impeachment issue and stop the runaway train of the Moon Jae-in administration."
He continued, "Although the 'pro-impeachment faction' currently controls the party, it is time for everyone to overcome the impeachment hurdle and accept one another," emphasizing, "We must move toward a grand unification structure that accepts the Taegeukgi faction, leader Ahn Cheol-soo, former Governor Kim Moon-soo, Editor-in-Chief Jeong Kyu-jae, and grassroots asphalt right-wing activists alike."

He added, "During the last general election, unification was merely a small-scale integration among the pro-impeachment factions, but now it is time for a great political maturity (大人政治) that also embraces the anti-impeachment factions," and said, "We must create a conservative-right big tent where everyone unites, so that even within our ranks, there is no longer talk of being a government-controlled opposition like the Minhandang under the Fifth Republic, and to avoid being mocked as the 'burden party of the people' by Democratic Party candidates. That is the way we can survive."
