Public Hearing on the Decommissioning Plan of Gori Unit 1 Next Month
Held Four Times in Busan, Ulsan, Ulju, and Gijang... Results Submitted to the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) announced on the 30th that it will hold four public hearings next month regarding the draft final decommissioning plan for Kori Unit 1.
Kori Unit 1, South Korea's first nuclear power plant, was permanently shut down in June 2017 after being recommended for permanent closure in 2015 due to economic feasibility and other reasons.
The final decommissioning plan is a licensing document that must be submitted to and approved by the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission to dismantle a nuclear power plant.
It contains a comprehensive plan related to decommissioning, including safety assessments, radiation protection, decontamination and dismantling activities, radioactive waste management, and environmental impact assessments.
KHNP conducted a 60-day public review of the draft final decommissioning plan from July 1 to August 29.
The public hearings are being held in response to the opinions submitted by residents during this period.
The hearings will be held starting on the 20th of next month at BEXCO in Busan, followed by the Jongha Gymnasium in Ulsan on the 23rd, the Seosaeng-myeon Administrative Welfare Center in Ulju-gun on the 25th, and the Chaseong Art Hall in Gijang-gun on the 30th.
Residents who wish to participate and present their opinions at the public hearings must submit a written application using the form available at the venue or Form No. 112 of the Enforcement Rules of the Nuclear Safety Act, available on the National Law Information Center, at least five days before the hearing date.
KHNP plans to submit the final decommissioning plan, reflecting the collected public opinions and the results of the hearings, to the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission.
