GGGI General Assembly and Board Meeting Held... Participating Countries Welcome President Moon's Carbon Neutrality Goal
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), based in Seoul, held its 9th General Assembly and 13th Board of Directors meeting on the 28th through both online and offline methods.
Under the chairmanship of Ban Ki-moon, Chair of the GGGI General Assembly and Board of Directors, 38 member countries discussed the reappointment of Secretary-General Frank Rijsberman, GGGI's role in supporting green growth in developing countries during the COVID-19 pandemic era, and key projects and budgets for 2021-2022.
In particular, major participating countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Denmark, New Zealand, and Australia welcomed President Moon Jae-in's mention of the 2050 carbon neutrality goal at the National Assembly on the morning of the 28th. The participating countries expressed their expectations that Korea will demonstrate leadership in accelerating the international community's climate response efforts through hosting the P4G Summit next year and serve as a stepping stone for the success of the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26).
At this meeting, Korea was reappointed as the Vice Chair country of the General Assembly and Board of Directors for the 2021-2022 term by consensus of the member countries, and former Climate Change Ambassador Shin Bu-nam was elected as a private director for the 2021-2022 term.
The Korean government will continue to support GGGI as its largest donor country and as the country responsible for the Vice Chair and Auditor roles, ensuring that GGGI can promote the transition to a low-carbon economy in developing countries during their COVID-19 response process.
