Lotte Confectionery Creates 'Korean-style Quaker' for Re-export to Southeast Asia... Surpasses 200,000 Packs Cumulative
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Saeng-hye] Lotte Confectionery announced on the 29th that the cumulative export volume of ‘Quaker Oat Granola,’ developed to suit domestic tastes, has surpassed 200,000 packs in Southeast Asia.
Since 2018, Lotte Confectionery has been importing, producing, and selling the global oatmeal brand Quaker domestically. Currently, 11 types of products are sold in Korea, all of which are ‘Korean-style Quaker’ independently developed by Lotte Confectionery to suit Korean tastes. Among these, Lotte Confectionery has opened export channels in Southeast Asia through two types of ‘Quaker Oat Granola’ (Cranberry Almond, Golden Nuts), gradually expanding sales outlets starting from Hong Kong.
The two types of Lotte Confectionery’s Quaker Oat Granola are currently exported and distributed to PepsiCo’s global subsidiaries in Hong Kong and Thailand. In Southeast Asia, Quaker oatmeal already enjoys high recognition and relatively greater popularity compared to Korea. However, among Quaker products launched locally, there are no granola-type products, which gives Lotte Confectionery’s domestically developed Quaker Oat Granola a competitive edge.
Lotte Confectionery began exporting to Hong Kong in August last year and has achieved cumulative sales of about 200,000 packs over approximately one year. PepsiCo Hong Kong produced a ‘Quaker’ advertisement featuring Korean language as is, and actively promotes Korean-style Quaker by posting the advertisement on local social network services (SNS). This strategy actively leverages the high preference of Hong Kong’s younger generation for Korea.
Additionally, from mid-this month, Lotte Confectionery started exporting Quaker Oat Granola to Thailand, selling an initial shipment of 10,000 packs. Preference for Korean products is also high in Thailand, and the recognition of Korean-style Quaker built in Hong Kong helped lead to a more favorable export contract. Export volumes are expected to increase further in the future.
