Chinese Contemporary Art Master Yue Minjun's First Large-Scale Solo Exhibition in Korea
Opening on November 20 at Hangaram Art Museum, Seoul Arts Center... Exhibition runs until March 28 next year
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] The first large-scale solo exhibition of Chinese contemporary art master Yue Minjun (岳敏君·Yue Minjun) in Korea, "Yue Minjun Laughs at an Era!" will be held from November 20th this year to March 28th next year at the Hangaram Art Museum, Halls 5 and 6, at the Seoul Arts Center.
Yue Minjun is known worldwide as a leading figure of the China avant-garde. He has solidified his position in the global art market by participating multiple times in major international events such as the Venice Biennale and the Gwangju Biennale. His 1995 work "Execution" was sold for $5.9 million (approximately 5.4 billion KRW) at Sotheby's auction in London in 2007, and his 1993 work "Geng Geng" was sold for HKD 54.08 million (approximately 7.5 billion KRW) at Christie's auction in Hong Kong, setting a record for the highest price in Chinese contemporary art at the time.
Yue Minjun is well recognized in Korea for his unique style and paintings that bring good fortune. The trademark of his work is a face laughing heartily with eyes tightly shut and mouth wide open showing all teeth. The exhibition covers the full spectrum of Yue Minjun's artistic world, from oil paintings featuring his signature laughing faces to large-scale sculptural works, and his recent flower-shaped face paintings. Visitors can see his representative works as well as his latest pieces at a glance. Large-scale bronze works that have not been shown in Korea before will also be exhibited.
The exhibition is curated by Yoon Jae-gap, director of the Shanghai How Art Museum, who previously served as the director of the Korean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale and the Busan Biennale.
