Among All Regions, Gijang-gun Was the Fastest to Distribute the First Disaster Relief Fund, Now Heading for the 'Second Round' Again
Including Marriage Immigrants and Overseas Koreans, 173,000 Residents Receive 100,000 Won Each
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Since the outbreak of COVID-19, Gijang-gun in Busan, which was the first in the country to provide disaster relief funds, is now promoting the payment of the 2nd disaster basic income. Among the 15 autonomous districts and counties in Busan, this is the fastest for the second round of support.
The 2nd support fund, named the ‘Gijang-type Disaster Basic Income,’ will be paid in cash at 100,000 KRW per person to all 173,000 residents registered in Gijang-gun, including marriage immigrants and overseas Koreans.
The 17.4 billion KRW budget for the 2nd disaster basic income will be covered by the development charges paid by Busan Urban Corporation for the Ilgwang District urban development project, as well as by fully cutting budgets for projects and event expenses that cannot be executed by the end of the year.
Gijang-gun plans to submit the amendment of the ‘Gijang-type Disaster Basic Income Ordinance’ and the 4th supplementary budget bill to the Gijang-gun Council’s extraordinary session held in early November to proceed with related procedures.
Once the Gijang-gun Council approves the agenda, payments to all residents are scheduled to begin in December.
On the morning of the 23rd, Gijang-gun visited the Gijang-gun Council, including Chairman Kim Dae-gun, to provide a preliminary explanation on the necessity of the 2nd payment of the ‘Gijang-type Disaster Basic Income.’
Oh Gyu-seok, the head of Gijang-gun, said, “We plan to save and fully utilize the Gijang-gun budget to promote the payment of the 2nd Gijang-type Disaster Basic Income for residents whose livelihoods have become difficult due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic,” adding, “We will mobilize all administrative power to help overcome this tremendous disaster.”
