The military service special research institute system allows university research institutes to continuously provide research opportunities to master's and doctoral personnel, contributing to the growth and development of national industries. Doctoral students subject to active military service enlistment are incorporated into university research institutes and conduct research for three years to complete their military service.

Hanyang University’s Electrical and Information Communication Technology Research Institute was recently selected as an Industrial Technology Hub Center by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, receiving up to 12 billion KRW in government funding over the next seven years. The institute stated, "With this designation as a military service special research institute, we will establish a foundation to become a leader in developing smart factory industrial intelligence technologies using artificial intelligence (AI) by attracting outstanding talent."
