[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] The Gwangyang Fire Station conducted a fire safety education session titled "Protect Our Home from Fire" for senior citizens participating in the Gwangyang City job program the day before.
According to data from the past eight years (2012?2019), the incidence rate of residential fires was 18.84%, and the mortality rate was 42.96%. Although the occurrence of fires at night is lower compared to daytime hours (12 PM to 6 PM), the fatality rate due to fires is higher at night.
This education session was designed to help seniors, who mainly reside in houses, live safely by covering topics such as ▲ causes of residential fires ▲ methods to extinguish fires ▲ evacuation procedures during a fire ▲ how to use fire extinguishers and precautions during initial fire outbreaks ▲ and how to respond in emergency situations.

The fire station’s education officer stated, “The injury rate among seniors aged 70 and older due to residential fires is 34.3%. While limited mobility and discomfort are factors, the lack of knowledge about fire causes makes it even more dangerous. Therefore, fire safety education is essential and will be continuously provided.”
