This is the first step toward registering the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) as a World Heritage site. Based on military operation maps from the Korean War, they will document the hill landscapes and territorial boundaries.
Cheorwon Hwaseolmari-goji and Baengma-goji are areas where the Republic of Korea Army and United Nations forces fought against North Korean and Chinese forces during the Korean War. Notably, from the start of the armistice talks in 1951 until the actual armistice agreement on July 27, 1953, each site witnessed four battles for control of the hills.
The Cultural Heritage Administration stated, "These locations hold significant spatial meaning as they provided key reasons for determining the shape of the Military Demarcation Line." They added, "In particular, Hwaseolmari-goji became a place where remains could be excavated following the signing of the September 19, 2018 Military Agreement, and it has transformed into a site of peace and cooperation, carrying historical symbolism."
