Just as there is the Korean Wave of ‘K-POP,’ there is also K-POL (POLICE), which spreads the security capabilities of the Korean police to Africa. It can be considered a wave of security.

Shilla University (President Park Tae-hak) is taking the lead in transferring Korea’s advanced security capabilities, including crime prevention skills and successful cases of scientific investigation by the Korean police, to Africa.

The Department of Police Administration at Shilla University conducted the ‘KOICA Nigeria Security Capacity Enhancement’ training from October 5 to 16. Since 2019 through 2021, Shilla University has been conducting this training annually for Nigerian police executives.

This year’s training was held online due to the global spread of COVID-19. Nigerian trainees watched lecture videos through Shilla University’s LMS (learning management system) and participated in real-time online seminars conducted via the video conferencing platform Zoom.

Shilla University organized the training with a faculty team composed of professors from the Department of Police Administration and experts from related fields such as the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency.

The program included various topics such as advanced crime theories, Korea’s cutting-edge crime prevention systems, scientific investigation techniques, and the use of security drones.

Shilla University also transferred know-how in public safety, which it has developed in collaboration with police, military authorities, and fire stations, by utilizing the country’s top-level drone infrastructure established on campus.

The spread of ‘K-POL’ by Shilla University was based on the accumulated achievements of the Graduate School of Public Safety Policy (Dean Lee Hee-tae) and Professor Kim Soon-seok of the Department of Police Administration (Director of the Safety Policy Research Institute). The university is proposing various measures to improve security levels in Nigeria.

A Shilla University official said, “This training will promote Korea’s advanced scientific investigation techniques and security activities and facilitate the dissemination of counterterrorism infrastructure. We expect it to contribute to strengthening Nigeria’s security capacity and enhancing security cooperation between the two countries.”

On the afternoon of the 16th, Shilla University held a completion ceremony for the ‘Nigeria Program’ in the large conference room on the second floor of the Comprehensive Lecture Building, attended by Director Kim Soon-seok of the Safety Policy Research Institute, participating professors, and the management team.
