Seoul Gangseo-gu Operates 'Gangseo Rest Shelter' for Mobile Workers
Set up to Help Improve Working Conditions for Mobile Workers... Equipped with Rest Area, Seminar Room, Counseling Room for Rest and Meetings... Programs for Mobile Workers Including Health Checkups and Labor Counseling Available
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangseo-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Noh Hyun-song) operates the ‘Gangseo Rest Shelter’ for mobile workers such as delivery and courier workers who have no comfortable place to rest.
With the spread of COVID-19 establishing a contactless culture, demand for delivery food and parcels has rapidly increased, concentrating the workload of mobile workers, but the treatment and working conditions for mobile workers remain poor.
The district opened the ‘Gangseo Rest Shelter’ last August to help improve the working environment of mobile workers, but it was closed due to the implementation of social distancing level 2.
With social distancing adjusted to level 1 on the 12th, the ‘Gangseo Rest Shelter’ resumed operations. It is located at 745-3 Magok-dong (near Magok Station Exit 1) and is open to mobile workers such as delivery workers, youth, and local residents.
It operates on weekdays from 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM and provides a lounge, seminar room, and counseling room where mobile workers can rest comfortably or hold meetings.
The shelter also runs labor welfare programs that practically help mobile workers improve their working conditions.
On the 22nd at 3 PM, a customized special health checkup including musculoskeletal, mental, and cerebrovascular risk assessments will be conducted for delivery workers in the shelter’s outdoor space.
The on-site health checkup is organized as a collaborative project with the Gyeonggi-do Workers’ Health Promotion Center and Rider Union. Workers who want a health checkup must apply in advance at the Gangseo Rest Shelter.
On November 18 and December 16, free labor consultations will be held regarding wage arrears, unfair dismissal, workplace harassment, and industrial accidents to assist mobile workers who have difficulty receiving proper protection.
The district plans to further activate the shelter as a resting space where mobile workers can relax comfortably, share information, and hold community gatherings.
District Mayor Noh Hyun-song said, “The Gangseo Rest Shelter is preparing various programs such as health classes, labor law lectures, and cultural classes in the future,” adding, “I hope it becomes a space where mobile workers can rest comfortably and receive strong support.”
