[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] South Korea and China have agreed to strengthen cooperation in the field of hydrogen energy.
The Ministry of Economy and Finance announced on the 16th that it held the 16th Korea-China Economic Ministers' Meeting via video conference together with China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). The meeting discussed expanding private exchanges, developing new technologies, and building hydrogen infrastructure.
Both countries also agreed to cooperate on ensuring safety related to hydrogen production and transportation, as well as implementing hydrogen-related pilot projects.
This was the first Korea-China Economic Ministers' Meeting held in 2 years and 8 months since February 2018, with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Hong Nam-ki and He Lifeng, Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission, attending as chief representatives.
They also reached a consensus on the need to continuously strive for linked cooperation between the New Northern and New Southern policies discussed at the Korea-China summit and the Belt and Road Initiative, and to strengthen director-general level channels to activate joint entry of companies from both countries into third countries.
On the Korean side, the necessity of exchanges in cultural content, tourism, and gaming sectors, which had been subdued, was emphasized, proposing the designation of 2021-2022 as the "Year of Korea-China Cultural Exchange" and the resumption of the "Korea-China Friendship Concert" featuring singers from both countries. The Chinese side proposed cooperation with Korea in the silver industry such as healthcare and nursing services, as well as the sports industry.
