Government Accelerates Establishment of '2050 Long-term Low-Carbon Development Strategy'... Public Forum on the 17th
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] The intergovernmental consultative body, including the Ministry of Environment, established to develop the 2050 Long-term Low Carbon Development Strategy (LEDS), will hold a public forum on the 17th to gather public opinions on the development strategy plan.
Considering the COVID-19 situation, this forum will be broadcast live online. Starting with a keynote speech by IPCC Vice Chair Hoesung Lee, Professor Kim Jung-in of Chung-Ang University will chair the session, where experts from various fields will discuss and collect public opinions.
In July 14, the government announced the Green New Deal as one pillar of the Korean New Deal, presenting a direction aiming for a carbon-neutral society.
Through this forum, once the '2050 Long-term Low Carbon Development Strategy' is established, the vision for achieving carbon neutrality is expected to become more concrete. UN Paris Agreement parties, including South Korea, must establish and submit their 2050 long-term low carbon development strategies to the UN within this year.
The forum will proceed with presentations, discussions among panelists, and Q&A sessions in five sectors: energy supply, industry, buildings, transportation, and social transition. Anyone can submit opinions on the development strategy via real-time online comments during the forum.
The intergovernmental consultative body will reflect valid opinions presented at this forum in the joint government report on the 2050 Long-term Low Carbon Development Strategy. Next month, public hearings targeting citizens, industry, and civil society will also be held.
The finalized joint report will be submitted to the UN within this year after review by the Green Growth Committee and the Cabinet meeting.
