Justice Party Gwangju Branch Urges Suspension of Plans to Restart Yeonggwang Hanbit Unit 3
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Justice Party Gwangju Metropolitan City Branch (Chairperson Hwang Sun-young) has called for the immediate suspension of the plan to restart Yeonggwang Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3.
On the 13th, the Justice Party Gwangju Branch issued a press release stating, “The Yeonggwang Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant Headquarters discovered 124 voids in the containment building, and Unit 3 of Hanbit, which has been halted for over 2 years and 5 months, is planned to be abruptly restarted within this week.”
They continued, “The voids found in Hanbit Units 3 and 4 account for more than 90% of all voids in nuclear power plants. Restarting the plant based on repair work limited to an external 20 cm range, without identifying voids and cracks within 1 meter inside the containment building and with steel plate thickness below standard, is undoubtedly a dangerously reckless act, akin to saying that drinking a hangover cure makes drunk driving acceptable.”
They also emphasized, “The structural integrity evaluation conducted by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power through Korea Electric Power Corporation Power Technology and external verification agencies cannot ensure objectivity and independence in evaluation and verification, as these are contractors of KHNP.”

Furthermore, they stated, “Even though three of the six reactors at Yeonggwang Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant have been shut down for several years, there has been no problem with power supply. We demand the immediate suspension of the restart plan for Hanbit Unit 3, which cannot be entrusted with our lives and safety, a thorough investigation into the poor construction, and the immediate decommissioning of the dangerously risky Hanbit Unit 3.”
