China Halts Imports of Australian Coal

China Halts Imports Due to Coal Oversupply and Environmental Issues
[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Jo Young-shin] China has halted imports of Australian coal.
Since the emergence of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) pandemic and the subsequent attribution of responsibility to China, the two countries have experienced political conflicts, including China imposing tariffs on Australian agricultural and livestock products.
The Hong Kong South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported on the 13th that Chinese coal importing companies have stopped importing Australian coal. SCMP stated that coal imports were halted following verbal instructions from the Chinese government.
SCMP added that due to China's low dependence on Australian coal, this coal import ban is likely to be prolonged, and political motives cannot be ruled out.
Quoting sources, SCMP estimated that ships carrying Australian coal have been unable to unload at ports for over a month, with approximately 7 million tons of coal waiting to be unloaded.
SCMP also explained that this suspension was not pre-negotiated with the Australian side.
SCMP noted that from the second quarter, as China's economy recovered, the Australian economy benefited. Infrastructure investments such as construction increased in China as part of economic stimulus measures, causing Australian coal exports to China (coking coal for steel production) to surge by 67%.
SCMP reported that while the Chinese government's import suspension appears to be retaliatory in nature, market conditions such as oversupply of coal in China also played a role.
Additionally, considering environmental issues, SCMP stated that the Chinese government might have imposed coal import restrictions. This approach was taken from the perspective of environmental concerns such as fine dust, providing a justification.

Along with this, SCMP added that since coal import quotas vary by region within China and the government can adjust them, the Chinese government took necessary measures accordingly.
