[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] The Korea Institute for Local Autonomy Development (President Kim An-je, Professor Emeritus at Seoul National University) will hold the 4th Korea Local Autonomy Development Awards this year to encourage central and local governments, public officials, and others who have contributed to the development of local autonomy on the 25th anniversary of the implementation of local autonomy.
The institute will hold the 2020 Korea Local Autonomy Development Awards ceremony at 2 p.m. on the 13th at the Baekbeom Kim Koo Memorial Hall Convention Hall.
The ceremony will be conducted in accordance with the government's social distancing guidelines to cope with the COVID-19 situation, and the ceremony will be broadcast live on the internet as an online awards ceremony.
The Korea Institute for Local Autonomy Development aims to play a foundational role in the development of local autonomy by awarding members of the National Assembly, heads of local governments and education offices, local council members, social organizations, and public officials who have demonstrated exemplary achievements in regional innovation and development through utilizing unique local resources or creative administration for regional development.
In April, the application guidelines were announced, and applications were accepted until July 31 across five categories: national government sector (members of the National Assembly), metropolitan autonomy sector (heads of metropolitan local governments, superintendents of education, and metropolitan council members), basic autonomy sector (heads of basic local governments and basic council members), public officials sector (central, local, and education public officials), and social organizations sector.
Then, on August 20, after strict evaluation by a total of four judges including Chairperson Ha Hye-su (Professor at Kyungpook National University, former President of the Korea Institute of Local Administration), 31 recipients were selected as winners of the 2020 Korea Local Autonomy Development Awards: 4 in the national government sector, 7 in the metropolitan sector (1 superintendent of education, 6 metropolitan council members), 18 in the basic sector (13 heads of basic local governments, 5 basic council members), and 2 in the public officials sector.
The members of the National Assembly receiving awards are Seo Sam-seok, Yoon Jae-ok, Im Jong-seong, and Cho Kyung-tae.
