[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun visited the Sejong the Great Tomb in Yeoju, Gyeonggi Province, on Hangul Day, the 9th.
The Cultural Heritage Administration has been carrying out the Sejong the Great Tomb restoration project titled "Restoring the Original Appearance of Sejong the Great Tomb" for the past six years and held a completion ceremony on this day.
In his congratulatory speech at the completion ceremony, Prime Minister Chung said, "I joyfully celebrate this meaningful day. I hope the historical significance and value of Sejong the Great Tomb will become more widely known and that it will bring comfort to the people weary from COVID-19 (novel coronavirus disease)."
He explained, "Sejong the Great always put the people first. He said, 'The peaceful era I dream of is a world where the people can smoothly carry out what they want to do.' Overcoming numerous difficulties and opening an era of cultural prosperity was also thanks to the spirit of loving the people."
He then mentioned the word "Saengsaengjirak (生生之樂)," known as a favorite word of Sejong the Great, meaning "the joy of the people living happily."
Prime Minister Chung emphasized, "The spirit of 'Saengsaengjirak,' which gives the people the joy of living, is the most necessary virtue to overcome the national difficulties we face. The happiness of the people is paramount."
He also promised, "Cultural heritage is a precious treasure containing the spirit of the Republic of Korea. The government will strengthen the management system of cultural heritage based on advanced technology. We will also strive to have our cultural heritage registered as World Heritage."
