"Government Needs Solar Power Sites Covering 70% of Seoul Area to Meet Schedule"
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] An analysis has revealed that an additional area equivalent to 70% of Seoul's size is needed to meet the government's solar energy targets.
According to data submitted by the Korea Energy Agency to Kim Jeongjae, a member of the National Assembly's Industry, Trade, Energy, Small and Medium Enterprises Committee from the People Power Party, the area required for 1GW (gigawatt) of solar power generation is 13.2㎢.
Considering the government's plan to increase solar power capacity to 32.2GW by 2034, a total area of 425.04㎢ is needed. This is equivalent to 70% of Seoul's total area (605㎢).
According to statistics from the Korea Power Exchange and the government's draft of the 9th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand, the solar power capacity this year is 13.4GW, with a target of 45.6GW by 2034.
