Full-Scale Development of Seopyeongtaek Area Including Pyeongtaek Port and Hwayang New Town
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Yuri] Following Dongpyeongtaek, including Godeok New Town and Sosabeol District, the development of the West Pyeongtaek area centered around Pyeongtaek Port is also gaining momentum. With the establishment of new towns such as Pyeongtaek Port Hwayang New Town, a large-scale new town, as well as the Hinterland cities of Hyeondeok District and Cheongbuk District, the development of the West Pyeongtaek area is expected to accelerate.
According to industry sources on the 5th, Pyeongtaek Port Hwayang New Town in 454-2 Hwayang-ri, Hyeondeok-myeon, Pyeongtaek City, Gyeonggi Province, will officially begin construction in mid-this month. Hwayang New Town is being developed as a new town with a total area of 2,791,195㎡, similar in size to Yeouido, accommodating about 20,000 households and approximately 54,000 residents. It is the largest private-led urban development project developed in Korea to date. Currently, the relocation of the nearby Anjung Branch Office of Pyeongtaek City Hall (scheduled to be upgraded to Seogu Office) has been confirmed for Hwayang New Town. A general hospital with 350 beds, spanning 22,770㎡ of total floor area with 4 basement floors and 10 above-ground floors, is also planned. A total of eight schools, including four elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools, along with numerous public facilities, will be constructed.

Meanwhile, nearby Pyeongtaek Port is the only port in Gyeonggi Province and serves as a hub for the West Coast industrial belt. Last year, container throughput reached 723,427 TEU (1 TEU equals one 20-foot container), marking a 4.9% increase compared to the previous year.
