Providing Experience to Propose Policies Capable of Real Change
Organizing a Child Rights Monitoring Group with 20 Students from Bitnuri Elementary School and Bitgaram Elementary School
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Good Neighbors Jeonnam Central Branch (Branch Manager Yu Giyong) announced on the 5th that it held the inauguration ceremony of the child rights monitoring group ‘Good Motion’ for a total of 20 students, including 8 students from Bitnuri Elementary School and 12 students from Bitgaram Elementary School.
Good Neighbors’ child rights monitoring group Good Motion is a compound of ‘good’ + ‘monitor’ and ‘action,’ through which children themselves recognize the importance of rights, check situations of child rights violations they experience in daily life, and propose policies that can bring about practical changes.
At the inauguration ceremonies held at each school, Yu Giyong, head of Good Neighbors Jeonnam Central Branch, presented appointment certificates to the child rights monitoring members, and they learned about the four major rights of children specified in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and had a free discussion about child rights.
After the inauguration, the child rights monitoring members held a discussion with Dongshin University students participating as mentors to freely share issues related to child rights and select activity topics.
Based on the child rights issues decided through the discussion, the child rights monitoring group investigates cases of child rights violations and proposes policies for the safety and protection of children in the local community.
In addition, Good Neighbors Jeonnam Central Branch plans to support the child rights monitoring group to directly visit the Naju City Council to urge problem-solving regarding child rights violation cases discovered by children, helping children raise their voices as members of the local community.
Yu Giyong, head of Good Neighbors Jeonnam Central Branch, said, “We must not forget that children are subjects of rights and members of society living together in the local community,” adding, “The activities of the child rights monitoring group will serve as an opportunity to inform that children have the right to voice policies related to children as members of the community, and Good Neighbors Jeonnam Central Branch will strive harder to ensure a society where children’s rights are respected from their side.”
