'Salgoti Moonlight Drive-in Theater' Reopens Its Doors
Opening of 'Salgoti Dalbit Drive-in Theater' with Artificial Moon Background Carrying Hope Messages to Overcome COVID-19... Free Screening of Popular Movies for the Whole Family from Sept 9 to 18, Creating Autumn Night Memories
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) will reopen the ‘Salgoti Outdoor Drive-in Theater,’ which brought great vitality to residents’ lives that had been stifled by the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in the first half of the year, in October.
In March, the district became the first autonomous district in Seoul to install a large screen in an urban sports park and operate a drive-in theater. This was part of ‘psychological quarantine’ for residents exhausted by depression and anxiety due to COVID-19. The free movie screenings, held 31 times until May, received great responses from residents who found it difficult to visit theaters.
This drive-in theater will be accompanied by the symbol of hope, the full moon. On the 16th of last month, the district installed one large artificial moon with a diameter of 12 meters and 21 small moons in Salgoti Park to pray for overcoming COVID-19 and to deliver a message of hope. A large screen was installed in front of the artificial moon sculpture so visitors can enjoy the romance of ‘autumn night moonlight movie viewing’ harmonized with the moon.
The screenings will be held six times in total on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from the 9th to the 18th at 7:30 PM. Starting with ‘The Lion King 2019’ on the 9th, followed by ‘A Dog’s Journey’ on the 10th, ‘Big Hero 6’ on the 11th, ‘Beauty and the Beast’ on the 16th, ‘Moana’ on the 17th, and ‘Frozen 2’ on the 18th, the lineup consists of popular films that offer fun and emotion for the whole family.
Movie admission is free, and reservations are accepted first for 80 vehicles. Reservations can be made through the Seongdong Cultural Foundation website or by phone. Parking fees within the sports ground will be waived from 6 PM on the screening day until the end of the event.
For safe movie viewing, hand sanitizers and thermometers are provided at the drive-in theater operation headquarters, and an ambulance is on standby to prepare for emergencies. The sports ground is disinfected daily. Non-face-to-face operation is the principle, so attendees must prepare their own drinks and snacks.
Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “I want to offer a small comfort to residents whose minds and bodies are exhausted due to the prolonged COVID-19 situation through a cultural experience under the beautiful moonlight, even if only for a moment. We will ensure that both body and mind remain healthy during these difficult times.”
