[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] Due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, the number of ‘Homechu-jok’?people spending Chuseok at home?is expected to increase. With the extended holiday period, the types of ways to spend the holiday at home are also expected to diversify.
The distribution industry is preparing related events and products to target Homechu-jok during the holiday period in response to the changed Chuseok holiday.
'From Hobby Supplies to Toys' Various Items on Discount Sale
Interest in hobby supplies that can be enjoyed at home is rising ahead of the Chuseok holiday. People are purchasing DIY kits that can be assembled or made by themselves, as well as living supplies for staying at home. Those spending time with family are increasingly buying board games to play with their children.
According to design product specialty shopping mall 10x10, sales in the hobby category increased by 44% compared to the same period last year over the past two weeks (September 11?25). Among them, DIY kit products that can be made alone, such as knitting and diamond painting, increased by 80%, and board game products that families can enjoy together also increased by 90%.
Accordingly, 10x10 is holding a ‘Home Healing 5-piece Set’ special exhibition for Homechu-jok spending the holiday at home until October 4. Under the concept of ‘Chuseok is for Netflix,’ living supplies such as cushion tables, floor toppers, and bed tables for home life are offered at discounts of up to 61%. There is also an exclusive discount event until October 4 offering various board games from the board game company ‘Board M Factory’ at up to 44% off.
There are also special exhibitions and events targeting parents who want to buy toys for children who have to spend the holiday at home. Homeplus is offering up to 75% off popular toys until October 14. Themed items that parents and children can enjoy together are sold at discounted prices, and until October 7, customers who purchase over 70,000 KRW with event cards will receive a 10,000 KRW gift certificate as part of the event.
Toys “R” Us, operated by Lotte Mart, is running ‘Toys “R” Us Pre-Chuseok Flex’ until October 7, offering up to 40% off popular toys. Various brand products are offered at discounted prices, and board game brands and educational toys that families can enjoy together at home during the Chuseok holiday are also sold at affordable prices.
Targeting Shoppers... Capturing Holiday Shopping Demand
Department stores are targeting Chuseok shoppers by holding large-scale regular sales events to secure increased consumer demand during and immediately after the Chuseok holiday period.
Lotte Department Store is holding an autumn regular sale event with participation from over 700 brands until October 11. Since the sale period overlaps with the Chuseok holiday, the event will be extended by one week compared to last year to disperse shoppers and provide more diverse benefits to stimulate consumption.
More than 700 brands are participating in this Lotte Department Store regular sale. New products across all categories including women’s and men’s fashion, accessories, and living supplies are discounted by 10?30%, and clearance product exhibitions offer discounts up to 70%.
Shinsegae Department Store, under the theme ‘Family Holiday,’ offers discounts of up to 70% on various brands across all stores. Large discount events for women’s clothing, handbags, and sports brands will be presented. A board game giveaway event for family customers is also prepared ahead of the holiday.
Online-only events reflecting the non-face-to-face consumption trend are also held. Fashion discount events for the Baba Group brands such as Jigott, Izzat Baba, and Izzat Collection are ongoing through SSG.com until September 27.
Hyundai Department Store has over 300 brands participating, including fashion, accessories, sports, and cosmetics. Discounts range from 10?30%. During this sale period, the mobile ‘Gift Service’ is strengthened, and shopping support funds are provided to 8 million people. Galleria Department Store also offers discounts of up to 50% on products from about 70 brands. During the regular sale period, ‘Farmers’ Autumn’ using local agricultural products is held.
Considering the inconvenience caused by limited parcel delivery during the Chuseok holiday, some companies are targeting Homechu-jok with products that can be delivered even during the holiday period.
